Setup CentOS

Community ENTerprise Operating System. A free rebuild of source packages from the Red Hat Enterprise Linux. And here is some hint to setup centos and configure it.

  1. CentOS Minimal Installation Network Configuration
  2. Turn off screensaver and monitor power saving
  3. Setup CentOS GUI

    # Update CentOS
    yum list
    yum update
    # Install GNOME Desktop
    yum grouplist
    yum groupinstall "X Window System" "GNOME Desktop Environment"
    # Start desktop automatically: setup default run level to 5
    vi /etc/inittab
    id:5:initdefault:
    # Start desktop manually
    startx
    
  4. Extend Partition in CentOS

    fdisk -l /dev/sda
    fdisk /dev/sda
    n p 3
    t 3 8e
    w
    reboot
    pvcreate /dev/sda3
    vgextend VolGroup00 /dev/sda3
    lvextend /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 /dev/sda3
    resize2fs /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00
    df -h
    
  5. Reload Vmware Config

    /usr/bin/vmware-config-tools.pl
    
  6. Add "Open in Terminal"

    yum -y install nautilus-open-terminal
    
  7. Add "Compress…/Extract Here"

    yum -y install file-roller
    
  8. Install GNOME System Monitor for CentOS

    yum -y install gnome-system-monitor
    
  9. Install System Config Firewall for CentOS

    yum -y install system-config-firewall
    
  10. Scroll the screen under console

    shift+pageup

    shift+pagedown

  11. Switching from Console to GUI mode and from GUI to Console mode

    Ctrl-Alt-F2 to Console mode

    Ctrl-Alt-F7 to GUI mode
